2014 is the year of the “Deep link” and the inaugural year of app indexing. Facebook’s entry with App Links and Google’s official App Indexing announcement last month prove the mobile ecosystem is moving in the direction of native apps.
The challenge will be strengthening the URI backbone for developers to implement deeplinks in their app.
Today, developers work very hard to create native apps but often lose user traffic and potential revenue to mobile websites for something as simple as in-app requests. For instance, clicking on a link while checking email or on an ad redirects a user to the mobile website, even when he has an app for that content installed on his device. The redirects also impact the user experience and engagement.
According to applink.org, “Right now, linking on mobile is a lot more frustrating and complicated than it is on the web. There isn’t an easy, consistent way to control what happens when someone clicks on your content in mobile, which makes it difficult to provide the best experience for your users.“
